Livin’ in the Sunlight, Lovin’ in the Moonlight solo ukulele playthrough

I am so excited to finally be offering ukulele tabs through my Patreon page. This video is meant to serve as a visual (and audio of course) learning aid. If you closely watch where my fingers go you can totally learn the tune just from this free video! But if seeing the tabs would be helpful to you as well, you can find them by joining my Patreon at any amount.

What’ll I Do – 1924 Irving Berlin cover

What’ll I Do – a ukulele jazz cover of Irving Berlin’s sad and sweet breakup song. Notice that extra-special rarely performed first verse and even rarely-er ever performed second verse! I made this recording today and now my reward will be to eat ice cream for dinner.

Let me know if you have played the “Blue Christmas” tab I shared on Patreon last week!

April Showers – 1921 song on a 1920s uke

Yes this song and this ukulele may in fact be the same age. A perfect match! I fell in love with this song when I found a recording of Nellie McKay performing it. I’ve been working on a fairly straightforward little recording project involving some songs from around 1924 (some of you are may be getting my public domain gist heh heh) and after a bit of digging I discovered “brand new” old verses to some of these tunes. So excited to share these lyrics that are so difficult to find in many recordings.

I Don’t Want to Set the World on Fire – Ink Spots cover on ukulele

The Ink Spots! What a pleasure it is to listen to them. (especially when Ella Fitzgerald sits in with them, my favorite!) I love “I Don’t Want to Set the World on Fire” — I originally learned it when I played it at a friend’s wedding — and it was so fun to revisit it yesterday and add some extra fun ukulele bits to it.

Dream a Little Dream of Me – a 1931 ukulele cover

Dream a Little Dream of Me: I wonder, have I stayed away from recording this song because Ella Fitzgerald sang it so well? I know her version best but the sweetest Doris Day is also among the many many singers of this song from 1931. In the spirit of honesty I’ll also claim that I know the Michael Bublé version quite well.

Dreamily yours—

The Puppy Song – Harry Nilsson cover on ukulele

The Puppy Song! I know this Harry Nilsson tune best from the hit 1998 internet-powered Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan charm fest that Nora Ephron directed: You’ve Got Mail. There are some great tunes on that soundtrack. Perhaps a cover album of the movie soundtrack is in order (do people do that?!) Oh how I love some old tech. Anyone else miss dial-up?

In other news I loved having an excuse here to feature the pups. I have two puppies and I call myself oh so very lucky.

Day and Night – a Sara Teasdale poem

Hi, hello, as you probably noticed I took last week off from making a video and I missed it so much! I a happy to be back today with another original tune. The tune is original but the words are yet again Sara Teasdale’s.

Part of what has been keeping me busy is that I have been doing text banking, trying to get people out to vote! I signed up at Seedthevote.org. There are lots of actions available there. I am also about to work on sending some actual letters through the mail with Votefwd.org. The official mail date is tomorrow, Saturday October 16! If you want to do it with me, let me know. It’s so much more fun to do with friends.
